The Most Low Maintenance Pets

Dogs and cats are great pets, but they require an awful lot of work to keep them healthy, happy and well adjusted. Each new addition will be greeted with curiosity, and the child can see which item brings out the most activity in their fish. A daily feeding, or a weekly feeding tablet is about the only real maintenance a good set up will require. Justification For Inconceivable Torture

Many folks have told me with pride that they are strong supporters of animal rights and they seem to revere and respect animals to a high degree. I have sometimes wondered if these same people might possibly have more respect for animals than people but that is another topic altogether. Many have even gone so far as to basically indicate to this writer that animals should be revered on just about the same level as humans. I am not sure about taking it to that degree, nevertheless I do believe that all animals are God’s creation and should be treated with tenderness, dignity, and respect.

The only consideration in this billion dollar money machine is the bottom line in dollars and cents, and innocent animals pay a dear price in terms of the unimaginable cruelty inflicted on them in order to satisfy our insatiable unhealthy desires.  According to the “USDA Slaughter Stats” for 2008, over 18.5 billion animals were slaughtered (there is a good reason the word “slaughtered” does not sound very friendly) and that figure rises every year.  You can be sure that precious little consideration will be given to any of the more than 18 billion animals that will die this year as to the methods of raising and then killing them. Many who speak of their love for animals turn a deaf ear to this obvious and incomprehensible cruelty when they sit down to their regular ritual of gorging on the flesh of innocent animals.

The High Cost of an Animal Based Diet

First of all let me say that if the flesh of animals was necessary for human survival I would be the first to stand up and say that we should consume them, hopefully using humane systems of raising and killing them. However, the fact is that eating animals is not even beneficial, much less necessary. It is actually the cause of the massive increases in the rates of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, clogged arteries, strokes, and high blood pressure. Therefore the hamburger you will eat tonight will come at an extremely high cost. The environment will suffer as excessive amounts of precious natural resources are necessary to raise the animal, and the animal will undergo unspeakable humiliation, degradation and torture. Moreover the consumer of the flesh will be taking a long step towards one or more of the above mentioned infirmities.

In the high stakes world of raising animals for human consumption the key is to squeeze the most out of each animal for the least amount of money. Therefore whether you are chowing down on some turkey, chicken, pig, duck, cow, or any other animal, be assured that your dinner was probably kept in a space so small that it couldn’t even turn around or lie down and that is, by the way, for the entirety of its cruelly shortened life. Many of the animals that you have consumed in the past and will consume in the future, were of course, not allowed the luxury of even a little exercise in the totality of their existence so that every bit of energy that their tortured bodies generated went towards producing flesh, eggs or milk. The huge corporation heads that are responsible for getting your supper to Safeway, have discovered that the more animals they pack into a smaller space, the more mansions and cars they are able to buy.

In order to satisfy your ritual craving for animal flesh, your “main course” was fed drugs and growth hormones to get it fatter faster and to make sure it didn’t die before it could “pay the piper”. They won’t be let out for an afternoon walk or even a stretch. They will not get out of that enclosure until they die.

Your breakfast bacon was warehoused in a crate so small that it was not able to turn around or lie down comfortably for the entirety of its shortened life. The pigs you have eaten (which is the reason you are fighting obesity and clogged arteries) are actually kind, intelligent sweet, inquisitive, loving creatures who certainly should not end up on your fork or stuck to your intestinal walls.

When you take a bite out of your “Flame Broiled Whopper” at lunch, remember that the cow that provided your indulgence (and your next heart attack) was castrated, and was subjected to branding, and had its horns torn out of its head. Rest assured that your hamburger won’t cost you one dollar more on account of these atrocities because the big corporations didn’t waste any money on things like pain killers before they ripped out the animals horns. And if it is all the same to you I don’t even want to discuss how uncomfortable castration would be while still completely conscious and without pain relief.

Drugged and Genetically Altered

Wash your hamburger down with some nice cold milk and rest in the fact that the dairy cows were drugged and genetically manipulated to produce more milk then they were naturally capable of. They were artificially inseminated so that they could have babies and thereby produce milk, but of course the farm factory did not allow any of your breakfast milk to go to the babies. They were stolen from their whaling mother right after birth and sent to veal farms where they will be housed in a cage too small to move for the remainder of their short lives. They will have their flesh artificially whitened so it looks more appealing to your palate, and when they have outgrown their incredibly small cage (remember they have never been out of it one minute since being stolen from their mother) they will be slaughtered so you can have some tender veal and a glass of wine at your favorite restaurant. Meanwhile their mother will be artificially inseminated again and the same process will be repeated until she is physically incapable of producing any more milk. She will undergo all of this and also face the most inhumane treatment imaginable awaiting the time she is deemed to be no longer useful and then she will be sent to the slaughterhouse.

There is No Such Thing As HUMANE MEAT

Every animal you have ever bought at King Soopers has undergone an existence that is nothing short of torture. Many would now make the case that they buy only “Humane Meat”, or “Free Range Eggs” or “organic” milk and so they have assuaged their guilt in the ritual consumption of animals. Even if these animals were truly raised in a totally humane system (they almost certainly were not) there is for all practical purposes no regulation in place to protect their slaughterhouse fate. When they have outgrown their usefulness (which means their bodies are wasted and spent) they will be jam-packed into trucks, unable to move, and driven over many miles in every possible extreme weather condition. Many will not survive the trip which will actually be a more merciful fate. If they do make it alive to the slaughterhouse they will likely experience one or more of these injustices; strangling, beatings, skinning, scalding, and butchering while still fully conscious. Find a Federal Meat Inspector or just the regular Joe who works in the slaughterhouse if you need verification of the above because if they are honest they will admit to witnessing these heinous acts repeatedly. Please do not turn a deaf ear to this because this most certainly was the fate of the animal you will consume for dinner tonight.

If You Really Love Animals the Solution Is Not Difficult

You might be one who claims to love animals (and really do) and even champion their rights but if you are an animal consumer you are the cause of unthinkable torture and cruelty to many of these innocents each and every year. If it were your dog or cat you would have the full extent of the law on your side if anyone were to so much as think of hurting it. I can say with utmost confidence however, that the cow that is the main course on your plate was also an extremely intelligent animal with a distinct personality. It was loving and loyal and an amazing creature. It truly would have made an excellent friend and companion no less suitable then your dog or cat, except that it would eat more and wouldn’t maneuver very well in the living room. You would probably be astonished to learn about the intelligence and distinct personality traits of chickens, hens, pigs, and other farm animals. If you really knew more about the intelligence of these animals and their true natures you would not readily be the cause of their misery. What is 3D Animation How is it Different From 2D Animation

In this article I will explain in simple terms, what goes behind the 3D animation that you watch in movies and what makes it different from conventional two dimensional animation.

What is that extra 3rd dimension? Take a piece of paper and sketch a simple figure on it (a cat, a dog or anything that comes to your head). Lets say it is a cat and it is facing you from that sheet of paper. So you have the front view of the cat in front of you. Suppose if you feel that you want to see the cat from a side, will it help if you rotate the paper or flip it? No. Why? It is simply because the sketch you have drawn has the 3rd dimension missing free 3d model.

Every real world object that you see around has a 3rd dimension and that is the reason why you can take it and rotate it to watch it from different angles. The sketch you have drawn had a length and a width, since the paper you used to draw also had a length and a width. But it lacks a thickness (3rd dimension) and hence your sketch also didnt have that extra dimension.

Suppose instead of sketching your imagination down on the piece of paper, you decided to sculpt it on a handful of clay. Since the medium you used (clay) had volume, you had to define the cats shape from all angles during the sculpting. Hence you unknowingly added that 3rd dimension to it and that is the reason you have the freedom to rotate it any way you want.

Before computers started playing their indispensible roles in the animation industry, everything was done manually by animators, who were essentially artists. They would create a series of slides having images on it, where each slides image is the continuation of the previous one in the sequence. For example if an animator wanted to simulate a ball falling down, they would create a sequence of slides where first slide would portray the ball at the top. The next slide will show the ball, may be 1 cm lower than that in the first slide. In the next one, again lower and so on, till the last slide shows the ball hitting the ground. When the whole sequence of slides are shown in front of the viewer in a fast rate, it creates the feeling of the ball falling down.

The whole process was tedious and time consuming. When computers came into play, the frame redrawing works had been minimised since, copying and pasting duplicate elements between successive frames was very easy with the computers aid. The artist has to make only the necessary changes that should exist between successive frames. As technology advanced, softwares evolved that again minimised the work of a 2d animator, in such a way that several things started getting automated. Using motion tweening and other techniques, an animator can set the initial position or shape of an object and then its final position and shape and the computer would generate the intermediate frames automatically. The artist even has the freedom to make corrections to that.

The 2D animation always lacked the essence, since all the real-world sceneries and objects are 3D model and when they gets transformed to 2D, they lose their reality. Later stage cartoons started to simulate the 3D effect by using gradients, and varying highlights, but it required huge extra effort from the part of the artist.

The stages in 3D animation are more in number compared to the 2D animation. The first part of 3D animation starts with character sketching and 3D modeling. In the next stage the characters are rigged for animation. In the next stage they are animated. This is in fact a too compact form of what happens in the background. Lets see each of them in a little detail.

Character sketching: This is the stage where an artist sketches how the character should look from various angles. Usually the sketch will be done on paper or canvas. As many variations in poses are created so that it would help the 3D Modeler to sculpt a 3D Model out of it.
Character Modeling: A 3D artist, who is expertised in a 3D modeling and animating tool, will examine the sketches and starts sculpting the figure using his imagination and skill. I used the word sculpting because the process is much similar to the real sculpting we do with raw materials like clay. The software tool that the artist uses provides various approaches to perform the modeling. Usually organic modeling techniques like Polygonal Modeling (a polygon is subdivided to get the desired shape), NURBS modeling (curves are arranged to create a surface flowing through them), Subdivisional Modeling (A hybrid blend between polygonal modeling and NURBS modeling) are used. In these modeling techniques, the 3D modeling artist will sculpt out the characters shape in 3D using a set of tools provided by the 3D modeling software, by following any of the above mentioned approaches.
The 3D Model obtained finally will be in an editable form and the model will be dependent on the approach used. For example a NURBS technique will yield a 3D Model in the NURBS representation (curves and surfaces). Once the modeling is complete, the artist converts it into the basic polygonal mesh (vertices alone). The polygonal mesh is nothing but a huge number of polygons that are arranged so as it forms the whole character. This conversion to polygonal mesh offers many advantages like faster rendering speed, and multi-software compatibility.
Scene building: In addition to the characters the animation will have an environment and related objects. The 3D modeling software provides methods to simulate the environment, model the world , sun etc. For example in the 3d modeling and animation software called Maya, the artist have a huge library of Paint effects that contains Trees, leaves etc from which he can drag and drop into a scene and customize it in accordance to needs.
Texturing: During this stage, all the objects in the scene are given suitable textures using the 3D animation tools specific facilities. Some tools provide only facilities for mapping an image texture on to the 3d model, whereas advanced tools even let you paint on the 3d meshs texture surface.
Lighting and Camera setup:
This process is much like that in a real world movie making. The 3D animation software provides different types of lights which you can place in the scene in any direction you want. You can adjust the intensity, cone angle or even the shadow cast by the individual lights. Camera also is the replica of the real camera we use for shooting. We can place multiple cameras in a scene; adjust its focal length, aperture size and almost every parameter that you can find in a real camera.
Animation: Once the static elements have been set, the 3D artist applies motion to them. This process, called animation is performed by setting keyframes. In order to animate a ball falling, the animator would set the first key frame at say 0th second with the balls position at the initial top position. He would set the next key at say 5th second with the balls position touching the ground. The 3D animation software interpolates the balls falling action between the 0th and 5th seconds. The animator can customize the interpolation behavior using graphs or by setting intermediate keys.
In Character animation, similar principles are applied. The skeleton will be animated by the animator and the 3d mesh skinned to the skeleton gets animated automatically. Character animation is often aided by plug-in tools (e.g.: biped) that has been created specifically for creating character animation sequences like walking or running cycles. The various scene elements, cameras and lights are animated using basic key-frame animation, based on the story board requirements.
Rendering:

Once the scenes are animated, it will undergo a process called rendering, in which the 3d representation is converted to a video format, which can be read and edited using professional video editing software.

How to Work With Animals and Do What You Enjoy Most

If you love animals, want to stand up for animal rights and need to make a living, then you may want to explore the possibilities of working in an animal sanctuary or for an animal rights organization. This is a great option for people who cannot afford to start their own sanctuary, or simply need more experience with animals and the running of a shelter.

To work in an animal sanctuary you need to have a huge love of animals. The work can be hard and somewhat draining, so a true desire to help animals will make this so much easier. As well as loving spending time with animals, it is important to be compassionate. Rescued animals have sometimes been through hard times. They may be traumatized and have behavioral problems. They could be skittish or even aggressive. Patience and empathy are needed to help these animals.

Working for an animal rights organization is suited to both practical (hands on) people and people who are more academic. There are jobs available working with the animals and others where you can work in the office and on animal rights campaigns.

You may want to look into the kind of animal shelter/organization you are applying for a job at. Some may be no-kill shelters, but others may take in so many cats and dogs etc that they have little option but to euthanize some of these animals. This can be very hard to deal with, especially if you are very sensitive (like me). If you find this hard to deal with you may want to apply at no kill shelters or an office job involving animal rights.

You must try and remember that euthanasia is sometimes the kindest option, especially for very sick animals. This is why it is essential to spread the message to spay and neuter pets, so that less animals are euthanized in shelters.

You have more chance of getting a job in animal rights if you have shown a true commitment to the cause. Gain experience by volunteering at a shelter, or perhaps organize protests and leafleting campaigns in your local area.

Many animal sanctuaries advocate vegetarianism and veganism. Out of respect for the animals you work with/for you should consider changing your diet to a more compassionate one.

A qualification in animal care may help you get a job and if you are a qualified vet or veterinary nurse even better!

Many sanctuaries do not have the funds to employ anyone and rely heavily on volunteers, but larger (better funded) sanctuaries and organizations employ people in many different roles. You could be a shelter manager, animal carer, driver, receptionist, administrator, accountant, campaign organizer, fund raising manager, vet, vet nurse, animal behaviorist, education organizer, school speaker, employee trainer. There are other jobs you may not even have thought of.

Generally jobs in not for profit organizations such as animal sanctuaries and animal rights organizations are low paid. People who work in this field, do not do it for the money. They do it for the love of the animals and a desire to bring about change. Of course you will be paid a liveable wage and this will vary from place to place. Your compensation will be huge in that you will have a very rewarding job and will be making a difference in the world. You will also be gaining valuable experience if one day you plan to start your own sanctuary or non profit organization.

Working as part of an animal rights organization or a sanctuary is a great way to help animals. You may already volunteer, write letters and take part in protests and you will know how great it feels to be proactive and part of bringing about change. Imagine how great you would feel if that was part of your 9-5 job.

You can make a difference to individual animals lives as well as progressing the movement as a whole. Working with animals really is a wonderful way to spend your life.

There are limited paid jobs available in the sanctuary and animal rights movement. A great way to get your foot in the door is to volunteer or become an intern. You can gain loads of knowledge and hands on experience.

Even if it does not lead to a job volunteering is a wonderful thing to do in your spare time and can make a huge difference to the organization. It also looks good on your resume when you apply for other jobs.
